AbstractThe objective of this study was to relate the organic carbon content to CaCO3 equivalent, and soluble Ca and Mg contents of some New Mexico soils. The results of this study show a significant negative correlation between organic carbon content and CaCO3 equivalent. There is a highly significant positive correlation between organic carbon content and soluble Ca, which decreases with decreasing precipitation. They also show the positive and highly significantly correlation between organic carbon content in the A horizon and soluble Ca in the B horizon (or C for soils without B horizon). A significant negative correlation was found between organic carbon content and soluble Mg content. The climate (precipitation) was an important factor influencing the relation between organic carbon content and CaCO3 equivalent, and soluble Ca in soils. These results agree with the statement of many investigators and disagree with some investigators. However, these results would be expected to apply to calcareous soils in arid and semi-arid areas..
