AbstractThe interpretive data base of the National Cooperative Soil Survey is largely use-invariant. The same data record applies irrespective of the present soil use. Soil quality requires a use-dependent data base and, commonly, point observations within components of map units. We present examples of point observations for the near surface combined with the use-invariant interpretive data base. The latter is applied below the depth of physical change caused by human activities or to properties at a shallower depth that are not affected by use. Both the use-dependent and the use-invariant properties are placed in quality classes. The class placements are integrated to form an overall quality assessment.
