AbstractVariation in ant species composition and relative abundance was studied on a desert watershed 45 km NNE of Las Cruces, New Mexico.... The results of this study suggest that the community structure investigated is the result of individual species' responses to their physical environment. They also suggest that species response to their physical environment may play a more direct role in structuring communities than modification of competitive relations between species as suggested by the view of desert ant communities structured by interspecific exploitive competition.
