AbstractThe Snowmelt Runoff Model (SRM) has historically been employed in the Rio Grande basin headwaters for simulation, forecasting and climate change assessment. In the past, the snow cover input required by SRM has been obtained from Landsat and NOAA-AVHRR satellite data. More recently, improved MODIS data on the Terra satellite has been employed to obtain frequent and high resolution snow cover data. Testing the MODIS snow mapping capability has taken place in two similar areas, the Pyrenees Mountains of Spain and the Upper Rio Grande Basin. The evaluation of available water supplies will be extended from the Rio Grande basin to downstream tributaries throughout Colorado and New Mexico. Examples of the snow cover mapping capabilities of MODIS and results of simulation, forecasts and climate change scenarios will be presented.
