| Abstract | During the spring and summer of 1967, phenology and occurrence patterns of ephemerals were observed on selected desert mesa sites east of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Twelve 4.5 ft. square quadrats, located at three elevations (4400', 4600', 5000') were read and mapped bi-monthly. Seedling development, floral bud formation, flowering, fruit formation, and death were recorded for all plants in each quadrat. No "spring" ephemerals were present on the plots in 1967. This was predicted because 1966-1967 late fall-early winter moisture was virtually absent. However, 1967-1968 late fall-early winter rains caused the plots to exhibit heavy growth of spring ephemerals. The appearance of summer ephemerals was closely correlated with summer rains in 1967. Phenological diagrams for four groups of plants were constructed illustrating differences in phenology. |
