AbstractThis chapter focuses on the controls and patterns of soil moisture in the Jornada Basin. First, we describe general properties that commonly contribute to soil water heterogeneity; secondly, we offer a brief overview of soil water research in the Jornada Basin; and lastly, we describe specific patterns of soil water content and availability observed in the Jornada Basin. Our goal is to describe general patterns of soil water that are likely to occur across the Chihuahuan Desert region.
