AbstractFifty-three stalks of Yucca baccata, Y. elata and Y. torreyi were examined from Dona Ana County, New Mexico, using a cluster sampling method. One-hundred-and-two larvae representing Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Hymenoptera, were collected from stalks and pods. The most common larvae were Prodoxus coloradensis and P. quinquepunctellus (Incurvariidae) which represented 64% of all larvae found. In addition, 50 stalks were put in enclosures in the laboratory for rearing adults; various Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and parasitic Hymenoptera have emerged. The impact of the larvae in the stalks showed that the stalks were weakened by the excavation tunnels the larvae produced which increases the likelihood that the stalk will fall to the ground where the seeds will scatter. The presence of larvae in the pods probably has little effect of reproductive success as only a few seeds per pod were ever damaged.
