Abstract

Hog production is highly organized, lending itself to strategic management such as that proposed by the manureshed concept of linking animal and crop production systems. This presentation reviews the manure management issues within the hog industry, focusing on key case studies where local accumulation of manure nutrients are manifest at a national scale. Historical trends in the industry point to the role of nutrient budget concerns in its evolution. Despite the challenges of relocating hog manure to areas of high nutrient demand, opportunities exist to adjust its management on farm as well as to integrate manureshed concerns into the long-term expansion of the hog industry.
