AbstractA preliminary study was conducted to examine the importance of including substrate costs of plant tissue biosynthesis in growth models of Yucca. The biochemical composition of plant tissue form select organs of Y. elata and Y. baccata were determined and used in the Penning de Vries model to compute the necessary substrate (glucose) required for their biosynthesis. Through the use of a simple growth model, it was found that substantial predictive error would be introduced if substrate costs were ignored for plant organs deviating significantly from a simple carbohydrate composition.
