AbstractWater stress in Fouquieria splendons was studied. Leaf water potential was used as an index of water stress. Various environmental parameters (precipitation, soil water potential, air water potential, air and soil temperatures) known to affect water stress in other species and possibly contribute to the initiation of dormancy in F. splendons were investigated. Simple linear regression analyses were run, regressing leaf water potential onto each of the environmental parameters which were used as independent variables. It was found that precipitation was the factor that seemed to be significantly affecting leaf water potential. However, it seems that some factor, or factors, other than available moisture induced fall dormancy.
