Abstract | Net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and leaf resistance (r1) to transpiration were evaluated while irradiating either the adaxial or abaxial leaf surfaces of Perezia nana (desert holly) and Helianthus annus (sunflower). The P. nana leaves are anatomically isolateral, borne vertically, and equal numbers of leaves are oriented in each of the four cardinal directions. H. annus leaves are borne horizontally and are anatomically anisolateral. P. nana showed no significant differences between Pn and r1 of the two surfaces whereas H. annus did. These data are discussed with respect to leaf display, mesophyll anatomy and stomatal density. |
