AbstractDrought is a major factor responsible for reduction of herbage production and stand of perennial grasses over wide areas of the Southwestern United States. This study was undertaken to show the relative severity of the 1947-57 drought period in southern New Mexico; show place to placed variation of drought severity of native forage producing perennial grasses to moisture deficiencies. Associated factors of grazing by livestock, rodents and rabbits, mesquite invasion and low production of viable seed are often responsible for retarding recovery of depleted range areas.
