Abstract

Dairy production is dispersed throughout the United States, but there are a few areas of high concentration in the Northeast, the Upper Midwest, the Southern Plains, Idaho, and California. The predominant management practices differ substantially from region to region, in size, degree of confinement, primary manure form (solid or liquid), and method of storage. As a result, the opportunities and challenges to expanding dairy manuresheds also vary widely. We present case studies of the various systems, to examine how well manure sources are matched to cropland sinks in each case, and to highlight possible areas of concern.
