AbstractFour breeding groups of purebred Brangus, Hereford and their reciprocal crosses raised at the New Mexico State University College Ranch and the Fort Stanton Experimental Range were evaluated for carcass characteristics.... Correlations among various live and carcass traits were calculated. As would be expected, quality grade and marbling were highly correlated. Slaughter weight was moderately related to weaning weight and average daily gain. Carcass weight per day of age was moderately related to average daily gain, weaning weight and slaughter weight. Significant correlations of rib eye area with slaughter weight and conformation were apparent. Cutability and yield grade were both strongly related to adjusted fat thickness along with moderate relationships to rib eye area and internal fat. Lean cuts per day of age was highly related to carcass weight per day of age and was moderately related to average daily gain, slaughter weight and rib eye area.
