Abstract

Crude fractionation of tarbush (Flourensia cernua) was performed by extracting successively with hexanes, diethylether, and ethanol, 35 Kg of leaves in approximately 7 Kg batches. Volatiles from these fractions were examined and the relevance of these findings discussed in relation to palatability studies. The hexane fraction was found to contain most of the monoterpenes while sesquiterpenes made up most of the ethanol fraction. The crude fractions were further submitted to fungal, algal, and termite bioassays. The ether fraction shows the highest activity against fungi. The hexane fraction shows selective activity against the cyanobacterium responsible for methylisoborneol induced off-flavor problem in catfish farming operations. All three fractions show a high degree of antitermite activity.
